The Best Summer Engagement Session Locations in Northern California

Engagement Session Tips

Summer in Northern California is all about adventure!

Longer days, warm evenings, and access to some of the most beautiful landscapes—mountains, lakes, coastlines, and open spaces. It’s the perfect time of year for couples who want their engagement session to feel like an experience, not just photos.

If you’re drawn to something scenic, a little adventurous, and full of variety, these are some of my favorite summer locations!

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is one of the most iconic locations in Northern California—and it’s beautiful all summer long.

What makes it so special is the variety. Within a short distance, you can move from forest to beach to dramatic overlooks.

Some of my favorite locations include:

  • Secret Cove – clear water and a more secluded, intimate setting
  • Round Hill Pines Beach Resort – sandy beach access with a relaxed, golden-hour atmosphere
  • Chimney Beach – rocky shoreline with that signature Tahoe blue and a slightly more adventurous edge
  • Edgewood Tahoe – open views and a more refined, elevated look
  • Tahoe Paradise Park – a peaceful mix of pine trees, open grassy areas, and its own small alpine lake for a quieter, more relaxed Tahoe setting, especially during golden hour
  • Valhalla Tahoe – tall pines, a classic pier, and mountain views to the east
  • Emerald Bay – iconic views from above, plus a trail down to the beach for a mix of overlooks and shoreline access, especially beautiful in the morning light
  • Sugar Pine Point State Park – a mix of forest trails, lake access, and towering pines that feels peaceful, scenic and distinctly Tahoe
  • Boat Sessions – a more elevated option offering open water views with that signature blue

Lake Tahoe is perfect for couples who want something scenic and elevated, while still keeping the experience relaxed and natural!

The Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada is where summer sessions start to feel like a true adventure!

These locations are a little more off the beaten path—quiet, expansive, and incredibly beautiful, especially as the snow melts and wildflowers begin to bloom.

Some of my favorite spots include:

  • Carson Pass (near Markleeville, CA) – one of the best places for July wildflowers, with wide open alpine views
  • Yosemite National Park (Yosemite Valley, CA) – iconic granite cliffs, open meadows, and a truly unforgettable landscape
  • Sly Park Recreation Area – Hazel Meadow + waterfall trail (Pollock Pines, CA) – a forest setting with tall trees and a short trail leading to a waterfall
  • Sardine Lake (near Sierra City, CA) – an alpine lake with incredible mountain reflections, especially at sunset
  • Donner Pass (Truckee, CA) – a dramatic overlook with sweeping mountain views and easy access

This area is perfect for couples who want something a little more adventurous—an experience that feels immersive, scenic, and completely unique.

Bay Area Coast + San Francisco

The Bay Area offers some of the most diverse scenery in Northern California—coastlines, cliffs, beaches, and iconic city views all within a short distance.

It’s a great option if you want something scenic and adventurous, with a mix of natural landscapes and recognizable landmarks.

Some of my favorite locations include:

  • Bodega Bay (Bodega Bay, CA) – rugged coastline with dramatic cliffs and a windswept, adventurous coastal setting
  • Crissy Field + Crissy Field East Beach – open beach views with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background
  • Palace of Fine Arts – classic architecture and a timeless setting
  • Point Reyes National Seashore (Point Reyes Station / Inverness, CA) – wide open coastal views, along with the iconic cypress tree tunnel for a more structured and distinctive setting
  • Marin Headlands (near Sausalito, CA) – sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and dramatic cliffs

This area is perfect for couples who want variety within one session—from coast to city to iconic overlooks!

Gardens + Estates (Woodside + Saratoga + Sacramento, CA)

If you’re drawn to something more refined while still being surrounded by nature, Northern California also has beautiful garden and estate locations!

These are perfect for a more polished look, while still keeping things natural and relaxed.

  • Filoli Historic House & Garden – expansive gardens with seasonal blooms and a timeless estate setting
  • Villa Montalvo – European-inspired architecture with manicured grounds and warm evening light
  • California State Capitol Rose Garden – classic rose blooms in a structured, timeless garden setting in the heart of Sacramento

These locations are ideal if you want something elegant and elevated, while still keeping the focus on connection and natural moments.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Session

Either way, I’ll help guide you toward a location that fits your vision and the kind of experience you want your session to be!
