The Best Spring Engagement Session Locations in Northern California

Engagement Session Tips

Spring in Northern California is one of the most beautiful times of year for engagement sessions.

The hills turn green, flowers begin to bloom, and the light feels softer and more romantic. It’s that perfect window before summer—when everything feels fresh, vibrant, and full of life!

Each month in spring looks a little different, and choosing the right timing can completely shape how your photos feel. Here’s a look at some of my favorite locations based on when they’re at their best!

Early March (Blossoms + Soft Spring Tones)

Early March is all about blossoms and those first signs of spring.

  • Almond Orchards (Modesto, Dixon, Woodland, CA) – soft pink and white blossoms that create a dreamy, romantic setting

April (Wildflowers + Color + Variety)

April brings incredible variety—wildflowers, blossoms, and vibrant color across completely different landscapes!

  • Magnolia Ranch Trailhead (Coloma, CA) – rolling hills filled with seasonal wildflowers
  • Crystal Hermitage Gardens (Nevada City, CA) – soft pink cherry blossoms, seasonal tulips, and a beautiful mountain backdrop in a peaceful garden setting
  • Pacific Grove (Monterey County, CA) – coastal views with seasonal purple wildflowers along the shoreline
  • Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden (San Francisco, CA) – vibrant tulips with a unique windmill backdrop
  • Micke Grove Regional Park (Lodi, CA) – a peaceful Japanese garden setting with bridges, water, and lush greenery
  • Hakone Estate and Gardens (Saratoga, CA) – a serene Japanese garden with spring blooms and layered greenery
  • Empire Mine Sate Historic Park (Grass Valley, CA) – historic stone architecture, manicured gardens, and spring blooms that create a refined, timeless setting

If you’re drawn to color and want options across different landscapes, April is one of the best times to plan your session!

May (Full Bloom + Variety + Refined Settings)

May is when everything really comes into full bloom!

You still have variety in location and color, but everything feels more lush and vibrant.

  • Filoli Gardens (Woodside, CA) – structured gardens with a timeless, elevated look
  • High Sierra Iris Gardens (Camino, CA) – seasonal blooms with a soft, romantic feel
  • Villa Montalvo (Saratoga, CA) – European-inspired architecture and manicured grounds
  • Viansa Sonoma (Sonoma, CA) – vineyard views with rolling hills and a warm, golden feel
  • California State Capitol Park (Sacramento, CA) – classic blooms and trees in the heart of the city
  • Folsom Lake (Folsom / El Dorado Hills, CA) – in super bloom years, lupines can cover the hillsides in soft purple tones, adding a rare and beautifully seasonal look

This time of year is perfect if you want a mix of color, texture, and variety, while still leaning into a timeless overall feel!

Choosing the Right Location for You

The best location isn’t just about what looks good—it’s about what feels like you!

Some couples are drawn to the coast. Others love the mountains, open fields, or garden settings. There’s no one right answer, which is why I always help guide you through choosing a location that fits your vision, your style, and how you want your photos to feel!
