The Best Fall Engagement Session Locations in Northern California

Engagement Session Tips

Fall in Northern California brings some of the most beautiful color of the year!

Golden aspens, warm-toned vineyards, orchards, and tree-lined paths all start to shift, creating a softer, richer look that feels both romantic and timeless. It’s one of the best seasons for couples who love natural color and a more cozy, grounded atmosphere.

If you’re drawn to warm tones and seasonal color, these are some of my favorite fall locations.

The Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada is one of the most iconic places to experience fall in Northern California!

When the aspens turn, the entire landscape shifts into shades of gold, creating a soft, glowing backdrop that’s hard to match anywhere else.

Some of my favorite spots include:

  • Hope Valley (near Markleeville, CA) – one of the most well-known locations for fall color, with open valleys, rivers, and endless golden aspens
  • Taylor Creek Visitor Center (South Lake Tahoe, CA) – a mix of aspens, boardwalks, and water that creates a layered and dynamic fall setting

This area is perfect if you want that classic fall look with bold color and a true mountain backdrop.

Apple Hill + Foothills

Apple Hill in the fall has a completely different look than spring.

The orchards, golden grass, oak trees, and surrounding forest come together in a way that feels warm, relaxed, and very Northern California.

Some of my favorite spots include:

  • Smokey Ridge Ranch (Placerville, CA) – a chestnut tree tunnel along with vineyard views for a more varied setting
  • High Hill Ranch (Placerville, CA) – an apple tree grove that creates a classic, seasonal orchard look
  • Sly Park Recreation Area (Pollock Pines, CA) – a mix of pine trees, golden grass, oak trees and a lake for a forest-meets-foothill setting
  • Erickson Ranch Hiking Area (Sutter Creek, CA) – rolling hills, oak trees, and golden grass for a wide open, foothill setting

This is a great option if you want something seasonal without needing to travel far into the mountains!

Wine Country

Fall is one of the best times for vineyard sessions!

The leaves begin to turn, bringing in deep reds, golds, and warm tones that feel rich and romantic.

  • Saluti Cellars (Somerset, CA) – vineyard views with warm fall color and a more elevated, intimate setting

This is perfect if you’re drawn to something a little more refined while still keeping that seasonal warmth.

Sacramento offers a quieter, more classic take on fall.

Tree-lined paths and seasonal color create a setting that feels timeless and easy, especially for couples who want something simple and beautiful!

Gardens + Estates

For a more polished and elevated look, garden estates are especially beautiful in the fall.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Session

The best location isn’t just about how it looks—it’s about the experience you want!

Some couples love bold color and mountain views, while others prefer something softer and closer to home.

Either way, I’ll help guide you toward a location that fits your vision and the overall look you want your photos to have!

Planning Your Fall Engagement Session

Fall color can be short-lived, especially in the mountains, so timing matters more this time of year!

If you’re thinking about scheduling your engagement session, the first step is to reach out. I’ll walk you through timing, location options, and everything you need to make your session feel effortless and true to you!

There’s something about fall that feels slower, warmer, and a little more intentional—and it’s such a beautiful season to capture this part of your story.

If this feels like the kind of session you’ve been dreaming about, I’d love to hear more about what you have in mind!
